When is the last time a Jim Carrey movie inspired you?
Okay, well that answer could be never. Me too. But this past weekend I watched a very underrated Jim Carrey movie, “Yes Man”. I’ve seen it at least 3 times on television so it was not new to me. But with some life events occurring over the past month, the movie had a deeper meaning for me than it ever has before.
If you haven’t seen the movie, here’s the premise: Carl Allen, played by Jim Carrey, attends a self-help seminar where he is hyptonized by the speaker to say “Yes” to every opportunity that is presented to him. Comedy ensues as he can’t say “No”. He gives his cellphone and all his cash to a homeless man just because the man asked, approves every loan that is presented to him at his job as a loan officer, and clicks every pop-up ad on his computer ordering personal products and a mail-order bride.
But an incredible thing happens at this same time. He takes risks that he would have never taken and his life is rewarded richly because of it. He accepts his nerdy boss’s party invitations and sees how much that friendship means to his boss. He accepts a ride from a stranger who turns into his love interest. She then invites him on spontaneous trips, 6:00AM morning jogs, and to dive bars he would have never step foot into.
I won’t give away the ending in case you haven’t seen it, but the over-arching theme is that he finally understands that the choice to say “Yes” has been his all along. All he had to do was say “Yes” to opportunities because none of them were life-ending, and many of them were life-altering.
Today I invite you to say “Yes” when opportunity comes knocking. At ReallyLocal Solutions, we are in the business of life-altering changes for businesses like yours.
